He has been admitted to practice law in six jurisdictions, both state and federal courts, with extensive experience working in the private and government sectors, including appointments to executive level management positions with multiple government agencies, practicing both domestic and internationally. Attorney Appleton’s diverse professional experience includes demonstrated success in criminal law, civil litigation, real estate and business transactions, and high value complex contract negotiations specific to the international and domestic sports and entertainment industry. Attorney Appleton served as the Deputy Attorney General of the United States Virgin Islands Department of Justice, supervising 14 divisions comprising 50+ division specific attorneys, investigators, and support staff. In this capacity, he testified before the Virgin Islands Senate on matters concerning proposed legislation and resource allocation directly reporting to the Virgin Islands Attorney General, all while maintaining an active criminal case load prosecuting high -profile felony cases, including sex crimes, firearms, drug trafficking, and multiple homicides. Attorney Appleton has extensive experience as a criminal defense attorney in both the private and public sectors. He worked as a trial attorney and attorney manager with the Wisconsin State Public Defender Trial Division supervising attorney staff in several rural counties of northern Wisconsin. With extensive civil and criminal trial litigation experience, Attorney Appleton has successfully represented clients charged with misdemeanors and violent felonies, including homicide, and actively served as a representative to several treatment courts in multiple jurisdictions, advocating for alternative dispositions for substance abuse offenders.
Attorney Appleton has experience with complex civil litigation, including working internationally as Senior Legal Counsel for the Koror State Public Lands Authority (KSPLA) in the Republic of Palau. In this capacity, Attorney Appleton provided legal counsel to the KSPLA Board of Directors, and supervised agency litigation specific to return of public land claims by indigenous populations and litigating superior title claims before the Land Court and Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Palau.
Attorney Appleton previously served as a staff attorney for the Honorable John A. Manglona, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Honorable Brenda J. Hollar, Superior Court Judge of the United States Virgin Islands, Division of St. Thomas and St. John.
Attorney Appleton is a graduate of UCLA and earned his law degree from Marquette University Law School, with an additional certificate in Sports Law from the National Sports Law Institute. Attorney Appleton has negotiated complex domestic and international contracts for professional and Olympic sport athletes.
